Logistics & Shore Support
After departure, once the yacht and the crew have been made fit to the ocean, there’s only one link that will keep us connected to the shore and it must be “ocean-fit” too: communications is a both-ways link and its strength and reliability depends again on the accuracy of the preparation as well as on the training of the user.
From VHF, MF and HF Radios, Navtex receivers, from GSM to Sat-comm and other newer-cheaper telephone links, either in GMDSS area or not, we have a choice of opportunities for keeping our ship-to-shore communications alive and efficient. Depending on the sea area that we are crossing we will have to know which one is better and which are the frequencies and the schedules of transmission. And know how to work it all out.
Once well established a ship-to-shore communication link will provide us with extremely useful information (i.e. Weather forecasts, navigational warnings, dangers..) and together will allow us to provide the shore with other information from our side.
OF offers an important strategical aid to ocean-goers: 24/7 availability: whether you need to know where to find a spare part (or even understanding which one you need), how to have it delivered to your next port of call with pre-organized assistance on site; as well as when needing a specific on-track detailed weather forecast or to be helped in making any kind of decision by who has full access to databases and search from the shore, the system has proven to be of the greatest utility, letting alone the sole reassuring perception to be followed step by step during the passage.
